Sep 22, 2026 U.S. businesses increased their purchases of cyber insurance and investment in cybersecurity controls in the past year as cyber threats remained their top business concern, according to the 2026 Travelers Risk Index, released Tuesday. Some 70% of companies purchased cyber insurance in the past year, up from 63% in 2025 and the highest share since the index became cyber-focused in 2018, Travelers said. Cyber insurance purchases among large companies rose to 82%, from 73% in 2025, while 50% of small businesses reported buying coverage, compared with 43% last year. Companies also invested in more cybersecurity controls, with 81% saying they use firewalls and data backups, both up from 76% last year, while 72% use multifactor authentication to validate administrative users, up from 60%. Employee background checks rose to 79% from 70% last year, while 74% said they had adopted protocols for onboarding and offboarding users, up from 63%. AI is reshaping the cyber threat landscape, the report said. An AI-related cyber breach or other event ranked as the second-highest specific cyber concern, cited by 55% of businesses. Attackers using AI to identify and exploit system vulnerabilities and AI-generated phishing, deepfakes and social engineering targeting employees or customers were among the leading concerns. Some 89% reported using AI on a daily basis within their workforce, yet only 59% have formal practices in place to govern its use. “Companies are focused on what cybercriminals are doing with AI, and that concern is justified. However, companies should be equally focused on the risks created by their own AI use when the right practices and policies aren’t in place,” John Menefee, vice president and enterprise cyber lead at Travelers, said in a statement. The survey of 1,202 U.S. business insurance decision makers was conducted online by Hart Research from June 15-28 and commissioned by Travelers.
