Lawsuit claims slopes are rigged Off Beat Apr 8, 2026 The only thing steeper than the mountains could be the pricing strategy, as a new lawsuit calls into question price fixing at two of the biggest U.S. ski operators. The class action filed in late March accuses Vail Resorts and Alterra Mountain of inflating daily lift ticket prices to nudge customers into buying pricey multi-resort season passes, as reported by Wyoming Public Radio. The suit claims the strategy limits competition — essentially turning a casual day on the mountain into a financial commitment worthy of its own ski lodge mortgage. If that sounds like a modern problem, think again. According to reporting by the radio network, concerns about ski industry power date back to the 1970s, when Colorado officials worried resorts were acting like monopolies after raising lift ticket prices mid-season by a whopping $2. At the time, lawmakers feared ski companies could end up running towns like “company towns of the old West,” only with more après-ski and fewer saloons. Efforts to rein in consolidation eventually fizzled, paving the way for today’s ski giants to snap up resorts and dominate lift access across the country. Now, plaintiffs argue that dominance is being used to steer skiers toward season passes like Epic and Ikon — because nothing says “spontaneous weekend trip” like a four-figure commitment. Vail Resorts has called the claims “without merit,” while Alterra declined to comment.
