The combined ratio for the group of 18 non-life reinsurers followed by Fitch Ratings improved to 86.1% from 92.7% in the first half of 2025, as the net income return on equity increased to 18.2%, according to a report from the ratings agency Tuesday. Catastrophe losses were much lower in the first half of 2026 than in the year-ago period, adding just 3.5 points to the combined ratio compared with 10.9 points in first-half 2025. Soft market conditions will put pressure on margins and overall returns for the remainder of 2026 as underlying underwriting results continue to deteriorate into 2027, Fitch said. Reinsurance market pricing is expected to soften further at January 2027 renewals as terms and conditions also see “growing flexibility,” Fitch said. “Fitch expects property catastrophe rates to continue to soften in 2027, absent a large-scale hurricane or other loss event(s),” the report said. Property rate declines reached into the double-digits at mid-year 2026 renewals as terms and conditions “marginally loosened,” although retentions and attachment points remained largely unchanged. Record levels of reinsurance industry capital are meeting only “modest demand growth” and continue to exacerbate the supply/demand imbalance, according to Fitch. Traditional reinsurance industry capital is further bolstered by record alternative capital from investors, driven largely by the catastrophe bond market but also including instruments such as sidecars. “Fitch expects strong alternative reinsurance capital market growth and attractive risk-adjusted returns into 2027, with investor supply and sponsor demand well balanced,” the report said.
