In Martin Blades v. Volkswagen of America Inc. and Arch Indemnity Insurance Co. , Judge Thomas Wyatt of the Tennessee Court of Workers’ Compensation Claims held the worker was entitled to treatment related to his left-hip replacement surgery following a July 2025 accident at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant. Mr. Blades, a lead maintenance technician, fell three to four feet into an open pit concealed by a piece of plastic, injuring his left leg and hip area. Although diagnostic imaging later revealed severe preexisting arthritis in his left hip, an orthopedic surgeon testified that the fall aggravated an otherwise asymptomatic condition and prompted him to seek treatment sooner. Volkswagen accepted compensability for other injuries related to the fall but denied compensability for the hip condition based on the opinion of another physician, who concluded the arthritis was not work-related. Judge Wyatt noted that Mr. Blades had no history of hip pain or treatment before the accident and that the first doctor had the benefit of observing the condition during surgery. The judge ruled that Mr. Blades was likely to prove that his need for hip-replacement surgery and ongoing treatment arose out of and in the course of his employment and ordered Volkswagen to authorize continued treatment.
