Net income soared 48.9% to $135.9 billion while the combined ratio improved to 93.0% from 96.7% in 2024, according to a report Thursday from Fitch. It was the second consecutive year of underwriting profitability after two years of losses, Fitch said. Results improved on the back of a quiet hurricane season and higher reserve releases, according to the ratings agency. Net premiums written rose 4.7% to $977 billion and the policyholders’ surplus rose 11.3% to $1.240 trillion. Growth in direct written premiums slowed to 5% in 2025 from 10% in each of the prior four years. Commercial lines DWP growth slowed to 4% in 2025 from 5% in 2024. Some margin compression is forecast for 2026, but the industry is still expected to show underwriting profitability, “albeit down from the prior year, as the market moves into a softer part of the cycle,” Fitch said. Net written premiums and direct written premiums are expected to increase only 3% to 4% in 2026 “as rates continue to soften and economic uncertainty impacts growth in certain commercial lines,” the ratings agency said.
