According to the company that provides workers comp services, AI is moving beyond pilot programs and into broader operational use, driven by increasing claim complexity and the need for earlier, more informed decision-making. However, the report notes many efforts still stall due to challenges with data quality, governance and workflow integration. Organizations seeing the most success are using AI to improve outcomes, not just automate processes. The report notes that while claim frequency “may be trending down,” claims that remain “are becoming harder to resolve quickly and cleanly,” citing concerns with older workers and comorbidities. “Both can slow recovery and increase the likelihood of complications, extended utilization, and disputes,” the report said. “At the same time, low-severity cases are shrinking as a share of the mix, which means the average claim carries more complexity and more financial exposure.” The report hints that AI has been assisting with the complexity: “Better decisions earlier in the claim matter more than ever, and the organizations that can reliably identify risk and remove friction will win.” The report also points to improvements in what it describes as the “pipeline to care,” with injured workers accessing treatment more quickly. For nonradicular lumbar spine pain, days from injury to first conservative treatment fell 50% between 2021 and 2025. Time to advanced imaging, including MRI and CT scans, declined 53% over the same period. MedRisk said earlier access to appropriate care is associated with shorter disability durations and reduced downstream costs, though it cautioned that utilization management remains critical to prevent overuse, particularly in imaging.
