The Waltham, Massachusetts-based institute said price growth slowed in many states in 2025, according to the report comparing prices paid for nonhospital professional services across 36 states. The study covers services billed by physicians, physical therapists and chiropractors, including evaluation and management, physical medicine, surgery, radiology, neurological testing, pain management injections and emergency care. Prices varied widely across states in 2025, ranging from 28% below the 36-state median in Massachusetts to 174% above the median in Wisconsin, WCRI said. Prices in states without fee schedules were 41% to 188% higher than the typical price in states with fee schedules. From 2008 to 2025, prices increased 43% in states without fee schedules, compared with 19% in states with fee schedules, according to the report. WCRI said the findings indicate that fee schedules remain an effective tool for price containment. The report also highlighted Florida, where workers compensation prices for professional services rose 41% in 2025 after a January fee schedule increase. Prices for most service categories in the state increased sharply, ranging from 26% for pain management injections to 67% for office visits, moving Florida from the lowest-priced state in 2024 to closer to the median in 2025. The 36 states studied account for 88% of workers compensation benefits paid nationwide.
