Nearly 9 in 10 automotive dealers say fraud is top of mind, according to a new survey from Experian Automotive, highlighting the growing operational and financial challenges posed by fraudulent transactions in auto retail. The findings show that 70% of dealers believe fraudulent deals are increasing, signaling an upward trend that dealerships can no longer ignore. Dealers reported averaging about four fraudulent transactions in the past year before detection, with roughly 45% saying a single fraudulent deal typically costs between $10,000 and $20,000. Nearly a third reported losses exceeding that range. Many dealers are shouldering most of the cost, with 64% saying insurance covers less than half of fraud-related losses and some lenders offering no coverage at all. Dealers also cited the balancing act between fraud prevention and maintaining a fast, smooth customer experience, with more than half naming the trade-off as their biggest challenge.
