Especially when you invent them five minutes before a job interview. A social media user has floated a plan to claim parenthood at their next job so they can leave the office whenever they want, according to a Cheezburger article published on Yahoo. The apparent inspiration: colleagues with children who, in the poster’s estimation, enjoy easier access to the exit. Meet little Loophole. Already gifted at getting a parent out of meetings. The article begs the question: “Is this a brilliant idea, or a recipe for disaster?” Cheezburger goes on to explain, “(e)ven though we are many years out of preschool, we still can cry and pout about things not being fair. We’re much more able to accept that someone got a slightly larger slice of cake than we were when we were in diapers, but when someone in your office gets special privileges that you are not offered, it can feel like a slap in the face.” The advice? Just ask to leave early if you need to — no matter what. Meanwhile, for employers tempted to respond by adding a family interrogation to the hiring process, Business Insurance would like to point out that the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission advises employers against asking applicants non-job-related questions about whether they have children, their children’s ages or their child-care arrangements.
