Kerry Canankamp, an activity center coordinator for the Town of Oakland since 2023, alleged that mold exposure worsened her health, causing fatigue, muscle pain, sleep problems and an approximately 30-pound weight loss. She sought payment of medical expenses she testified totaled $10,000 and restoration of sick leave, according to Kerry Canankamp v. Town of Oakland, filed in the Tennessee Court of Workers’ Compensation Claims at Memphis. An environmental consultant found moisture damage and multiple types of mold in air samples collected from the building in October 2025. Earlier inspections had identified leaks and signs of mold. Ms. Canankamp’s medical testing produced mixed findings. A physician who treated her independently said her history was typical of mold toxicity and that workplace exposure matched the onset of symptoms. Oakland argued that she had received treatment for the same complaints before working at the center and pointed to negative mold testing. Judge Allen Phillips found Ms. Canankamp credible, including her acknowledgment of earlier health problems and testimony that her condition worsened at work. She said her health improved and her weight returned after she stopped working in the building. The judge nevertheless denied payment because the invoices were not signed or authenticated and the physician’s letter did not address whether the charges were reasonable. He also found the court lacked authority to restore sick leave.
