That tops last year’s 22.6 million and could cost employers more than $5.2 billion in lost productivity. Since 2005, UKG has tracked what it calls “Super Bowl Fever,” and the trend line is clear: workers aren’t just disappearing — many are planning their exits in advance. Of those expecting to miss work, about 13.1 million say they’ll take a preapproved day off, while 6.5 million plan to swap shifts with a co-worker. Roughly 3.3 million admit they’ll call in sick without being sick, and 1.6 million say they’ll simply ghost work — a notable drop from last year. Another 4.9 million expect to show up late without warning. Still, uncertainty reigns: about 8.2 million employees say they’ll decide at the last minute whether they’re working. And Super Bowl Monday is just the opener, according to UKG. Workers also flagged the Winter Olympics, March Madness, the FIFA World Cup — and even a potential Taylor Swift – Travis Kelce wedding — as future attendance wild cards in 2026.
