The expanded map uses more than 500,000 ground-based hail observations collected between 1955 and 2024, combined with physics-based modeling and machine-learning algorithms to identify hail risk globally, the insurer said. The map previously covered only the U.S. and Australia. Hail has become one of the fastest-growing contributors to property losses over the past decade, as severe convective storms have become more frequent and intense. Damage commonly affects roofs, facades, yard storage, and roof-mounted equipment, including HVAC systems and solar panel installations. The map provides insight into hailstone size and kinetic impact energy, which are key drivers of structural damage, FM said. The map is available through FM’s client portal and publicly on the insurer’s website.
