Almost three quarters, or 73%, of the 15 insurer respondents said they would seek rate increases in 2026, with 27% saying they will keep rates flat and none planning decreases, according to the report, from specialty insurance broker Ames & Gough. Most, 82%, say they will target increases of up to 5%, while the others said they plan increases of 6% to 10%. Claims severity and defense costs are weighing on insurers, the report shows. Higher claims severity in 2025 was reported by 60% of insurers surveyed, up from 53% in 2024 and 41% in 2023. None reported lower claims severity, a first for the survey. Almost all (93%) said increasing defense costs were “materially” affecting claim severity, including more aggressive plaintiffs attorneys, more expert witnesses, longer resolution times, and higher panel counsel and vendor costs. Inflation in the forms of labor costs, tariffs, and supply chain challenges hitting material prices was cited by 82% of insurers as influencing their decision to raise rates in 2026, according to the report. Natural catastrophe exposure and adverse loss histories were also cited as factors influencing decisions on rate movements for 2026. Other “disruptors” affecting the architects and engineers professional liability insurance market include social inflation and litigation funding, cited by 93% of respondents; the growing use of artificial intelligence and technology by design firms, 80%; and talent shortages/workforce turnover, 53%.
