Off Beat Sep 29, 2026 Some workers count the days until they’re back on their feet. Prosecutors say one federal employee was logging enough miles on hers to warrant a trail map. Michelle Bouziden, an assistant special agent in charge with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Inspector General, allegedly collected $51,571.73 in disability and workers compensation while tackling approximately 17 mountain-climbing expeditions, KSL.com reported. After a workplace concussion, the Utah employee reported symptoms that prevented her from performing tasks including walking and climbing, according to a recently unsealed indictment. Prosecutors say her extracurricular itinerary included more than 140 miles of hiking and 35,469 feet of elevation. Among the alleged excursions: nearly 60 miles through Italy’s Dolomites in eight days, shortly after submitting paperwork saying she remained too symptomatic to return to work and couldn’t go outside. Mandatory medical evaluations proved harder to fit into the schedule. Ms. Bouziden allegedly cited “wellness retreat” conflicts while pursuing mountain adventures in Colorado and Italy. She faces charges including wire fraud, false reports for federal workers compensation benefits, obstruction and theft of government funds. The hiking sounds exhausting. Explaining it could be an uphill climb.
