Wrong mortgage. Off Beat Sep 24, 2026 Employers hunting for their next star hire may be up against a formidable recruiting rival: the candidate’s current house. A bigger title and a better salary can lose some shine when accepting the offer means surrendering a low mortgage rate and paying more for somewhere to live. Americans are increasingly staying put, with millennials and lower-income households showing particularly sharp pullbacks in moving, according to Bank of America research reported by Realtor.com. For companies recruiting beyond their own ZIP codes, that adds a complication: Finding the right person doesn’t necessarily mean getting that person through the office door. The report cites Atlas Van Lines research showing employees are turning down work relocations over concerns including moving expenses, housing costs and mortgage rates. Staying near family also figures into the decision. Yet half of employers still want to increase relocations. The recruiting pitch, then, may need to extend beyond career advancement to whether candidates can afford the address that comes with it.
