Gallagher & Co. Jul 15, 2026 Insured losses from natural catastrophes reached $46 billion worldwide during the first six months of 2026, 28% below the 10-year average of $64 billion and 45% below the most recent five-year average of $82 billion. First-half insured catastrophe losses were the lowest since 2019, according to a report Wednesday from Gallagher Re, the reinsurance brokerage of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. Severe convective storms caused approximately $26 billion in insured losses, more than half the total, below both the most recent five- and 10-year averages of $38 billion and $30 billion, respectively. There were 11 natural catastrophe loss events of more than $1 billion, compared with a 10-year average of 16, including five that caused multi-billion-dollar payouts, the lowest amount since five in 2020. The first half of the year also ended with a fifth consecutive quarter without an insured loss event of more than $10 billion. This year has seen El Niño climate conditions, which can lead to reduced hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin, but a higher frequency of storms in the Pacific basin. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that there is now an at least 81% chance of “very strong” or “super” El Niño intensity, according to the report.
