Cento Fine Foods, the popular Italian food brand behind many a Sunday sauce, is being sued in California over allegations of “tomato fraud,” according to ABC News. Two shoppers claim the company falsely labels its canned tomatoes as VIP “Certified San Marzano” tomatoes. But — splat! — they are not. San Marzano tomatoes, grown in Italy’s Campania region, have protected status in the European Union, meaning only tomatoes grown in the right place and certified by the proper consortium get to wear the fancy title. Think Champagne, but for your lasagna. The lawsuit argues Cento’s tomatoes aren’t the real deal and says shoppers paid premium prices for what they believed were authentic San Marzanos. The filing, accessed by ABC News, even compares true San Marzano tomatoes to the “Ferrari or Prada” of canned tomatoes — which is a very glamorous life for produce. The plaintiffs want more than $25 million for allegedly deceived consumers. Cento, meanwhile, says the case is “entirely without merit” and plans to fight it. The company notes it successfully beat a similar lawsuit in New York and says its tomatoes are grown in the proper region and certified by a different third party. Somewhere, an Italian grandmother is watching all this unfold and quietly judging everyone.
