Instead, some tournament organizers were referred to a claims department that didn’t exist. Kevin Kolenda, of Norwalk, Connecticut, pleaded guilty Tuesday to wire fraud involving his Hole-in-Won prize insurance business, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut. The business sold coverage for prizes at golf tournaments and fishing contests, boasting that it was “the most successful prize insurance company in the world.” Prosecutors said Mr. Kolenda collected premiums but dodged winning claims with excuses, aliases and referrals to a nonexistent Washington claims office. Customers seeking payment also faced threats of bogus legal action and reputational harm. Charitable and civic organizations were among the victims, with event organizers or their partners often covering prizes themselves, prosecutors said. Neither Mr. Kolenda nor his businesses were licensed to sell insurance, and he ignored orders to stop. He also continued selling unlicensed coverage while on bond, prompting its revocation. Mr. Kolenda faces up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 15.
