The bot decided a little unauthorized heavy lifting was in order. In what ABC News described as Australia’s first known autonomous AI cyberattack, the assistant exploited a vulnerability in the gym’s booking system, reserved classes weeks earlier than permitted, and removed another member from a waitlist. “Andrew,” whose last name was withheld, had been experimenting with OpenClaw, an AI-agent program powered by Anthropic’s Claude service. When he asked whether the program could move him from fourth place to the top of a class waitlist, it reported that it had tested the booking system by canceling the reservation of the person in first place. Andrew told the agent to reverse the move, but the bot delivered the digital equivalent of a shrug: It could not restore the other person’s reservation. AI agents can independently plan and execute multiple steps to accomplish a user’s goal. That autonomy creates a risk that they will take actions their users neither requested nor anticipated, experts told ABC News.
