Property rates posted the steepest declines globally, while casualty was the only major line to record a global rate increase, driven by claims severity and ongoing litigation pressures in the U.S., the broker said in its latest global insurance market index. Globally, property rates fell 12%, compared with 9% declines in the prior two quarters, while casualty rates increased 2%, led by a 7% jump in the U.S. Excluding workers compensation, casualty rates increased 11% in the U.S., Marsh said. U.S.-exposed casualty risks continue to face heightened underwriting scrutiny, pricing pressure and increasingly selective capacity, the report said. Financial and professional lines rates fell 3% globally, compared with a 5% decrease in the prior quarter, while cyber liability rates fell 4%, supported by stable capacity and continued insurer competition. U.S. property rates declined 13% in the quarter, marking the eighth straight quarter of decreases. Global capacity and strong competition, including in some higher-risk sectors, continued to broaden placement options as capacity expanded, Marsh said. Underwriters generally eased scrutiny and offered policy enhancements to win business, according to the report. Auto liability remained challenging, primarily due to ongoing loss experience, with double-digit rate increases common. Risk-adjusted umbrella/excess rates rose 15%, compared with 18% in the first quarter, while absolute umbrella/excess rates increased 11%.
