Insured losses were 4% above the 21 st -century first-half average despite the sharp decline from the record first half of 2025, the broker said in its first-half Global Catastrophe Recap. U.S. natural catastrophes generated about $36 billion in insured losses, 26% above the long-term regional average since 2000, driven mainly by severe convective storms, the report said. Overall, U.S. catastrophes accounted for about 77% of the global insured losses during the period. At least 13 events, 11 of which occurred in the U.S., generated insured losses of at least $1 billion in the first half, Aon said. Outside the U.S., Windstorm Kristin in Portugal and Spain also exceeded that threshold. Severe convective storms remained the costliest insured peril globally, generating about $31 billion in insured losses, including $27 billion in the U.S. The largest insured event was a U.S. severe convective storm outbreak from April 23 to 29 that generated more than $5 billion in insured losses. A March 10-11 severe convective storm outbreak over northern Illinois and Indiana that produced record hail near the Chicago metropolitan area and EF3 tornado damage near Kankakee and surrounding areas was also among the costliest first-half events. Despite Illinois and Indiana setting annual tornado records by midyear, insured losses from U.S. severe convective storms remained below the more than $40 billion recorded in each of the first halves of 2023 to 2025 because of lower year-to-date frequency across all three sub-perils and a more fragmented loss pattern in densely populated areas, the report said. Notable uncertainty remains in assessing the impact of the June 24 Venezuela earthquakes, but initial information suggests that it might become a billion-dollar industry loss event, Aon said. Economic losses from the event are estimated in the range of $20 billion to $30 billion.
