The bestselling author of “Bel Canto,” “State of Wonder,” “The Dutch House” and “Tom Lake” told Wirecutter that she wrote her latest novel, “Whistler,” while walking on a treadmill desk from her Nashville, Tennessee, home office, after years of neck, arm, wrist and hand pain made the traditional writer’s crouch less “tortured artist” and more “pending ergonomics claim.” Ms. Patchett said a doctor once recommended carpal tunnel surgery, but she suspected the trouble started in her neck. She tried physical therapy, exercise, a new chair, a new computer, a new keyboard and even standing desks, which left her shifting from hip to hip like someone waiting for a delayed boarding call. Then fellow author Susan Orlean suggested a treadmill desk. The acclaimed author said the setup changed her posture and eliminated pain in her neck, arms, wrists and hands. Her workstation includes a monitor on a riser, an ergonomic keyboard and a mouse, she told a reporter.
