A work-related injury caused by a lithium-ion battery and meeting one or more of the general recording criteria under Section 1904.7 of OSHA’s recordkeeping standard must be entered on OSHA Forms 300, 301 and 300-A, or equivalent records, the agency said in a news release Monday. The letter of interpretation, from late January, “highlights the growing need for awareness of safety risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in workplace environments,” OSHA said in the release. “These batteries can pose safety and health risks to workers during manufacturing, usage, emergency response, disposal, and recycling. Potential risks include fires, explosions, and exposure to harmful chemicals.” OSHA said safety steps employers can take include ensuring adequate ventilation, storing batteries in cool and dry locations, monitoring storage areas for flammable or toxic gases and providing safety showers and eyewash stations. Letters of interpretation are OSHA’s official responses to questions about how its requirements apply to specific workplace hazards. Such letters may not create new employer obligations. In June, the U.S. Labor Department launched an expanded opinion letter program aimed at improving compliance assistance and helping employers, workers and stakeholders better understand how federal labor laws apply in specific situations.
