OpenAI invited Dave Eggers, who penned “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius ” before you could prompt authorship, to its headquarters hoping to change his mind about artificial intelligence. Instead, he apparently treated the visit as an in-person opportunity to click “thumbs down.” Mr. Eggers told roughly 200 employees that ChatGPT’s effect on educators has been “catastrophic,” according to Futurism, citing an interview with the Financial Times. He said students who use the technology to compose assignments risk never developing their own voices. When one employee said they had used ChatGPT to write a poem, Mr. Eggers offered a distinctly low-tech alternative: Leave the house, meet some people and join a writing group. OpenAI had invited Mr. Eggers after he criticized CEO Sam Altman’s praise for an AI-generated short story about grief, which the author dismissed as “pastiche nonsense.” Despite spending an hour trashing the host’s signature product inside its own headquarters, Mr. Eggers said the gathering was poignant. “I had a ball,” he told the Financial Times.
