As the popularity of weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and similar GLP-1 medications grows, bridal shops are finding themselves in an awkward business bind — gowns ordered months in advance no longer fit by the time brides walk down the aisle, as reported by Fox News 13 in Florida. At Satin and Lace Bridal Boutique in Riverview, co-owner Alison Farnan told a reporter dresses are typically purchased about a year before the wedding because ordering can take four to six months, followed by several more months for alterations. That timeline used to work well when brides were dropping the traditional 10 or 15 pounds before the big day. Now, some are losing 50 or 60 pounds — enough to change five or six dress sizes and turn a simple hem job into a full-blown inventory crisis. “Most dresses can be altered up to two sizes,” Ms. Farnan said in an interview. Doctors say the math tracks. Dr. Lisa Ferreira of AdventHealth said patients on newer weight-loss medications can lose 15% to 20% of their body weight over five to six months. For bridal shops, that creates a risk management problem worthy of its own wedding registry: contract disputes, rush reorders, unhappy customers and dresses that suddenly belong to nobody. Many boutiques now require brides to sign contracts committing to the size ordered at purchase, making clear that dramatic post-order body changes may not be covered by alterations. In other words, before saying yes to the dress, businesses are making customers say yes to the disclaimer.
