The investigation, led by Nepal’s Central Investigation Bureau, found that hospitals, helicopter operators and trekking guides were all part of a coordinated chain that generated forged medical records, embellished diagnoses and fabricated flight logs, according to insights published by IPMI Global. Investigators said that executives from three mountain rescue agencies allegedly orchestrated nearly 300 staged or medically unnecessary helicopter evacuations, draining roughly $19.7 million from foreign insurers. The alleged practices undercut Nepal’s image as a destination defined by “pure spirit and honest people,” the Nepal Tourism Board said.
