Residential and habitational property insurance renewal rates dropped by 10% to 25%, according to the mid-year report, released Wednesday, “but rate relief is sharply tiered by risk quality,” the report said. Commercial property rates declined by 5% to 20%, the report said. In many cases, previously reduced limits have been restored, the report said. Property catastrophe rates declined by 5% to 15%. “Reinsurance remains favorable for this sector, and alternative capital is providing further options for insureds,” the report said. Casualty rates, though, continue to rise. Commercial automobile liability rates increased 5% to 15%, with insurers requiring more details on fleet composition, driver information and safety controls, the report said. Umbrella and excess liability rates rose 5% to 20% due to larger jury verdicts and settlements, known as social inflation, as well as capacity constraints and “structure management,” the report said. General liability rates rose from flat to up 10%, depending largely on industry, the report said. Environmental, directors and officers and cyber liability saw only modest rate changes, the report said. Professional liability was also largely flat. The exception was medical malpractice, which ranged from flat to up 15%. “Frequency and severity of claims and nuclear verdicts (over $10 million) continue to be large factors on rate” in medical malpractice, the report said. “Property softening could reverse quickly on a single major catastrophe or a shift in reinsurance, while casualty hardening is structural and unlikely to ease until industry reserves stabilize,” the study’s authors predicted.
