The increasingly common request to round up a purchase for charity is wearing thin with shoppers facing stubborn affordability pressures, according to a Moneywise report. A YouGov survey cited by the publication found 36% of consumers across 17 markets were unhappy about being asked to round up their bills for charity, while just 21% welcomed the prompt. The requests are lucrative. In 2024, 92 point-of-sale campaigns raised more than $275 million, Moneywise reported, with drives at Taco Bell, PetSmart, Walmart and Petco accounting for more than $190 million. But for shoppers counting every dollar, the few cents can come with a larger emotional price tag. Research cited in the report found that pressure to make an immediate decision, the presence of other people at checkout and the intrusive nature of the request can trigger negative feelings, thus potentially souring consumers on both the retailer and future giving. For retailers, the practice can also pose a risk management challenge, as repeated checkout pressure may erode customer trust, damage brand reputation and turn a well-intended charitable campaign into a source of consumer backlash. Critics also question why cash-strapped customers are being tapped at the register while large corporations collect the goodwill. One nonprofit adviser told Moneywise that retailers can act as pass-throughs without contributing corporate funds themselves.
