Sometimes you have to go after a trademark, too. Christian metal band Demon Hunter is suing Netflix, Netflix Studios and AEG Presents, alleging the blockbuster “KPop Demon Hunters” franchise is causing consumers to confuse the long-running band with Netflix’s considerably more sparkly demon-fighting operation, according to the Los Angeles Times. And the band says it had proof: in February, someone who bought $500 tickets to a Demon Hunter concert in Albany, New York, sought a refund after realizing the tickets were not for a “KPop Demon Hunters” show, according to the lawsuit. A month later, an “Inside Edition” producer reportedly emailed Demon Hunter’s manager seeking an interview with a songwriter associated with “KPop Demon Hunters” following the movie’s Oscar win. For Demon Hunter, which formed in Seattle in 2000, the mix-ups are no laughing matter. Its corporate entity, Hyde Lane, trademarked “Demon Hunter” for live entertainment in 2014 and later sought additional protections covering recorded music and merchandise, the Times reported. Netflix, meanwhile, began filing trademark applications for “KPop Demon Hunters” merchandise in August 2025. The band alleges Netflix’s enormously successful animated movie has eclipsed its established identity, a problem that could grow with plans for a global “KPop Demon Hunters” concert tour in partnership with AEG Presents. Hyde Lane is seeking to hold Netflix and Netflix Studios liable for trademark infringement, although the lawsuit does not specify damages.
