The proposed funding, announced Monday and intended to expand compensation for more than 300 claimants, requires approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The money comes from diocesan resources, parish contributions and insurance recoveries, the diocese said in a statement. Under a previous agreement in March 2024, the trust was funded to $87.5 million. The agreement caps more than five years of litigation with hold-out insurers and clears a major hurdle to fully capitalizing the trust, law firm Lowenstein Sandler, which represents the victims, said in a statement. The insurers agreeing to the latest settlement are Interstate Fire & Casualty Company and National Surety Corp., which were acquired by Arch Capital from Allianz in 2024; Century Indemnity Co., a unit of Chubb; and various London market insurers, including syndicates at Lloyd’s of London, a spokeswoman for Lowenstein Sandler said. The diocese sought bankruptcy protection in 2020 as it faced hundreds of abuse lawsuits. (An earlier version of this story misstated the total amount of compensation available to claimants.)
