In their updated outlook, CSU researchers said they now forecast nine named storms, four hurricanes and one major hurricane, down from their June outlook of 11 named storms, five hurricanes and two major hurricanes. The updated forecast also calls for accumulated cyclone energy – a measure of the overall intensity and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes – of 50, down from 70 in June. “We further reduce our 2026 Atlantic basin hurricane season forecast and now anticipate a well-below-normal season,” the researchers said in the report. CSU said the El Niño pattern is expected to be the dominant influence on the season, generating elevated levels of vertical wind shear across the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean that typically suppress hurricane development. Sea surface temperatures in the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic are currently near their long-term averages, researchers said. The probability of at least one major hurricane making landfall along the continental U.S. coastline is now 17%, well below the long-term average of 43%, they said. The probability of a major hurricane tracking through the Caribbean is 19%, compared with the historical average of 47%. “As with all hurricane seasons, coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season. Thorough preparations should be made every season, regardless of predicted activity,” researchers said.
