S.B. 2178 would require businesses to carry at least $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate general liability insurance, including liquor liability coverage. It would apply to businesses seeking special event licenses to sell or distribute alcoholic beverages at events. The bill also requires individuals serving alcohol at such events to ensure the event is properly licensed. A special event license may be issued to organizations, associations, or nonprofits organized for political, fraternal, charitable, religious and social purposes, according to the measure. The bill, which passed the Senate by a 42-3 vote, now heads to the House for consideration. If enacted, it would take effect Nov. 1.
