Stefan Pildes was arrested Wednesday and charged with wire fraud for allegedly misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars raised under the guise of charitable giving. Prosecutors say the event promoted donations to nonprofit organizations but failed to deliver, effectively defrauding charities that were supposed to benefit from the seasonal goodwill. According to a federal indictment, Mr. Pildes raised about $2.7 million tied to SantaCon but donated only a small portion, instead using the bulk of the funds to support a lavish lifestyle. Alleged expenditures included trips to Hawaii and Las Vegas, a $100,000 stay at a boutique Costa Rican resort, and roughly $124,000 on a Manhattan apartment lease, along with high-end meals and a luxury car. U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton told the news outlet the case reflects a breach of public trust as well as financial misconduct. “He took advantage of New Yorkers’ generous holiday spirit to finance his lifestyle,” Mr. Clayton said, adding that the scheme deprived charities of funds they were led to expect.
