Oct 16, 2026 Travelers reported higher third-quarter earnings Friday as commercial insurance pricing stayed largely stable and investment income rose. Net income increased 2% to $1.92 billion in the quarter, compared with $1.89 billion in the prior-year period. Net written premiums were essentially flat at $11.48 billion. Excluding the sale of its Canadian operations earlier this year, net written premiums increased 2%, Travelers said. After-tax net investment income increased by 7% to $908 million, reflecting higher yields on the insurer’s fixed-income portfolio and growth in average invested assets. Pretax catastrophe losses increased to $538 million from $402 million in the prior-year quarter, primarily due to severe wind and hailstorms in the United States. Travelers’ combined ratio improved 0.5 percentage points to 86.8%. The company also recorded $234 million in favorable prior-year reserve development, compared with $22 million a year earlier. The favorable development was recorded despite a $295 million addition to asbestos reserves. Across its three main operating segments, business insurance net written premiums increased 3% to $5.87 billion; bond and specialty insurance premiums rose 12% to $1.21 billion; and personal insurance premiums declined 7% to $4.40 billion, reflecting in part the Canadian divestiture. In business insurance, net written premiums increased 4% excluding the Canadian operations. Middle market premiums rose 7% to $3.45 billion, while national property and other premiums declined 4% to $809 million, the insurer said. The renewal premium change in the business insurance segment was 4.1%, including 5.4% in middle market business and 7.8% in small commercial business. Commercial insurance pricing remained largely stable, with little change in property and liability pricing trends from the second quarter, Chairman and CEO Alan Schnitzer said on an earnings call with analysts. “We’re not prepared to call a bottom,” he said of property pricing, but the sequential change was very small. In bond and specialty insurance, management liability premiums increased 6% to $649 million, while surety premiums rose 21% to $414 million. Renewal premium change in management liability was 3.8%. Mr. Schnitzer said on the call that AI-based insurance buying tools could change distribution, but adoption would likely be gradual, particularly for more complex risks. Consumers can use digital tools to compare insurance prices, but they often turn to agents when buying more complex coverage, he said.
