According to the complaint, Hub International Midwest Limited v. Austin Rapanos , Mr. Rapanos was an owner of A.S. Arbury & Sons, a Midland, Michigan-based insurance brokerage that Hub acquired in March 2024. As part of that deal, Mr. Rapanos received close to $1 million and agreed not to compete with Hub in Michigan or solicit its clients for five years, or two years after leaving the company, whichever is later, according to the complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Mr. Rapanos resigned from Hub in March this year, telling the company he planned to leave insurance for his family’s real estate business, the complaint said. Hub alleges he instead joined Creative Insurance Group, a Midland, Michigan agency doing business as Anchor Risk Management, where two other former Arbury owners already work. Hub claims more than 10% of Mr. Rapanos’ former client accounts have already left, calling that loss “inconsistent with normal attrition” for a departing producer. The complaint brings two counts — breach of the purchase agreement and breach of a related confidentiality and non-solicitation agreement — and seeks a temporary restraining order, injunctive relief and damages. Mr. Rapanos did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
