President and CEO John Doyle said the brokerage expects to counter pricing pressure by building new capabilities in fast-growing sectors, including digital infrastructure, and using AI to drive growth, productivity and efficiency. “We had some unsurprising headwinds from a pricing point of view, but our results were solid, execution is strong, and we feel good about our growth prospects as we look ahead,” Mr. Doyle said on a conference call with analysts. Marsh’s global insurance rate index declined 6% overall, following a 5% decline in the first quarter. Rates in the U.S. fell 2%. Global property rates fell 12%, an acceleration from the prior quarter, while financial and professional liability rates declined 3% and cyber rates fell 4%. Global casualty rates increased 2%, led by a 15% increase in U.S. excess casualty rates. Marsh reported second-quarter revenue of $7.40 billion, up 6% from the same period last year, as growth in its brokerage and consulting businesses more than offset a decline in reinsurance brokerage revenue. Underlying revenue, which excludes the effects of currency movements and acquisitions, increased 5% in the quarter. Net income for the second quarter rose 5% to $1.27 billion. Revenue in Marsh’s Risk & Insurance Services division increased 4% to $4.8 billion, or 3% on an underlying basis. Marsh Risk reported revenue of $4.1 billion, a 6% increase and up 4% on an underlying basis. Underlying revenue grew 4% in the U.S. and Canada and 5% internationally. Growth in the U.S. and Canada improved during the quarter, supported by strong new business production, said Marsh Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer Mark McGivney. Reinsurance brokerage arm Guy Carpenter’s revenue fell 2% to $664 million, as property catastrophe pricing continued to decline. The headwind from rates had a roughly six-percentage point impact on Guy Carpenter’s underlying growth in the quarter, Mr. McGivney said. “Despite the challenging market, Guy Carpenter executed well and delivered double-digit new business growth in the first half, as well as high 90s client retention,” he said. Consulting revenue increased 10% to $2.6 billion in the quarter, led by 15% growth at Marsh Management Consulting and 7% growth at Mercer.
