London-based Aviva says it uncovered a record £230 million, or just over $306 million, in bogus insurance claims, with scammers increasingly using generative AI to create fake crash photos, repair invoices and medical documents convincing enough to slip past a busy claims handler. The insurer is now using its own AI systems to flag suspicious patterns at scale, from questionable timestamps to repair costs that don’t match regional averages, as reported by the Guardian. The company says the problem is no longer just the classic exaggerated claim — although “claims inflation” remains part of the total. AI tools now allow individuals or small groups to manufacture evidence for multiple high-value claims without needing corrupt garages, doctors or paper trails. Aviva’s response is a human-in-the-loop system: AI scans claims for anomalies, then investigators decide what warrants a closer look. The insurer says the goal is not to automatically deny claims, but to surface the ones most likely to be fraudulent.
