According to the recently released U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General’s fiscal year 2026 audit work plan, the review will assess OSHA’s actions to prevent and respond to workplace violence, which the agency defines as any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation or other disruptive behavior occurring at a worksite. Workplace violence remains a significant occupational safety concern, the inspector general’s report said. Acts of violence and related injuries are the third-leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the United States, according to OSHA data cited in the audit plan. Of the 5,486 fatal workplace injuries recorded in 2022, 849 involved intentional injury by another person. The inspector general’s office said the new audit will evaluate steps OSHA has taken since a 2001 review found gaps in the agency’s approach to workplace violence. That earlier report concluded OSHA could take additional actions to address workplace violence, including improving training and outreach efforts and developing better recordkeeping systems for incidents involving workplace violence. The upcoming audit will determine what measures OSHA has implemented to address those issues and how effectively the agency is working to prevent workplace violence in U.S. workplaces.
