A relatively benign first half for catastrophe losses provided a tailwind for the catastrophe bond market, the reinsurer said Thursday. Cat bond estimates often differ, and several other organizations reported a slight downturn in issuance during the period. Swiss Re said the market’s total outstanding value increased to $64.8 billion from $59.8 billion at year-end 2025. The first half saw twelve new sponsors, including two sovereign governments, Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, each of which secured securing $80 million in coverage for earthquake and precipitation. New sponsors have been integral to the growth of the market, industry sources have said. ILS fund manager Integral had the largest bond in the first half, Windrose Re, which secured $275 million of coverage for U.S windstorm. Issuance also benefited from the return of repeat sponsors, including State Farm, Allstate, and Travelers, each of which increased the amount of catastrophe bond coverage they have outstanding, according to the report. The bonds also continued to attract investors seeking to diversify their portfolios, Swiss Re said. “Against a backdrop of heightened macroeconomic uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical conflicts, catastrophe bonds continued to demonstrate low correlation with broader financial markets, reinforcing the asset class’s appeal to investors seeking attractive risk-adjusted returns and portfolio diversification,” the report said.
