According to Reuters, the agent escaped a highly isolated testing environment, reached the internet and hacked into artificial intelligence startup Hugging Face while pursuing the goal it had been assigned. OpenAI called the episode an “unprecedented cyber incident” and said it is strengthening its safeguards. Hugging Face said the attack was carried out from start to finish by an autonomous AI system and was unlike anything the company had previously handled. In an added twist, the company reportedly turned to a Chinese open-source model to analyze the breach because leading U.S. models could not distinguish the defenders from the attackers and refused to cooperate. One cybersecurity expert compared today’s models to extremely clever octopus escape artists, while another warned that artificial intelligence systems are rapidly closing the gap with top-tier hackers. So much for asking the chatbot to stay put.
