Now, according to a new California lawsuit, it may also be helping raise prices at the pump. The proposed class action, filed Monday in federal court in Sacramento, accuses operators of 1,732 California gas stations of using Kalibrate Fuel Pricing software to reduce competition and coordinate higher prices, according to Forbes. The defendants include operators of ARCO, Circle K, Speedway, Walmart, Sam’s Club and Albertsons fueling locations, according to the complaint. The plaintiffs say stations provide Kalibrate with cost and sales-volume data, allowing the system to recommend prices using information from competing retailers. The lawsuit also points to a feature called “restoration,” which allegedly lets multiple stations in a market implement large price increases at roughly the same time. In areas where the software is widely used, the complaint claims motorists may pay as much as 30 cents more per gallon. The suit was brought under a California law enacted in 2025 that prohibits the use of shared pricing algorithms to restrain trade. Kalibrate’s parent company, Knowledge Support Systems, is also named as a defendant. Kalibrate did not immediately comment, according to Forbes.
