Hotel Shield, which is funded by private equity firm Eagle Venture Fund, uses a camera that can be installed at the front desk, said Wes Lyons, CEO of Hotel Shield and general partner at Eagle Venture Fund. The system alerts the user if facial images of guests match those in registers of missing or exploited children or in sex-for-sale advertisements. The system uses a platform that handles cases and preserves evidence, and investigators can help gather information from staff and witnesses. The system is meant to help hotels collaborate with survivor support organizations and law enforcement, Mr. Lyons said. The system is installed in about 40 hotels throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The trial is open to hotels in Texas, Tennessee and Georgia and group owners nationally, he said. Since last year, several hotels have been required to pay millions in verdicts or settlements after being accused of negligently allowing sex or labor trafficking on their premises. Insurers are increasingly being ordered to pay their defense costs.
