As reported by the BBC, the 86-year-old Welsh legend said ITV fired him from the singing competition, where he has served as an on-and-off coach since its 2012 debut. “The reason given is because of a financial difficulty with insurance,” Mr. Jones wrote on social media. The explanation later shifted to “refreshing” the show — television language for moving the furniture around and hoping nobody notices a knight has gone missing. Producers offered Mr. Jones a reduced role in which he could appear without being involved from the start. He was, unsurprisingly, not thrilled. “There’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job,” he wrote. The show said it was still discussing some form of involvement with him. Mr. Jones has survived changing musical fashions, changing lineups and generations of men attempting his songs at karaoke. But in show business, the hardest note to hit may be the one that satisfies the insurance company.
