According to The New York Times, federal courts are seeing a surge in lawsuits filed by people representing themselves, now armed not with law degrees but with chatbots that can turn a grievance into a very official-looking avalanche of motions, citations and legal-sounding paragraphs. The Times spotlighted Donald Sauve, a Minnesota man who first filed a handwritten lawsuit over the loss of his home. A judge dismissed it in less than a month. Then Mr. Sauve returned with ChatGPT and Claude in his corner, filing a typed complaint plus 50 additional filings, including a “case law synthesis.” The result was the same: dismissal. But first, court staff had to process the whole paper blizzard. One judge was not amused, writing that litigants cannot dump hundreds of pages on a court and expect judges to find the arguments for them. Another court official said Minnesota’s federal district court has seen a roughly 50% increase in non-prisoner pro se filings since around March 2025. The problem, judges told the Times, is that AI can make a weak case look dressed for appellate court, complete with headers, confident phrasing and sometimes fictional citations. Legal experts also noted the upside: AI could help people who cannot afford lawyers understand and access the courts.
