Gallagher & Co. Jul 1, 2026 Abundant capital at July 1 reinsurance renewals drove property catastrophe rate decreases as high as 25% or higher in some cases as supply continued to outpace demand. Dedicated reinsurance capital was up 11% year on year and reached $648 billion at year-end 2025 as premiums grew at just over 1%, “widening the imbalance between supply and demand and intensifying competition,” said Gallagher Re, the reinsurance brokerage of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. Capacity was “plentiful” and easily met increased demand, particularly in the U.S., according to a separate report Wednesday from Aon. Casualty reinsurance renewals were “broadly stable,” according to Gallagher, showing more differentiation than previous renewals. Reinsurers maintained their caution related to accounts with U.S exposure, the broker said. Specialty lines including cyber and aviation were largely driven by an oversupply of capacity, Gallagher said. July 1 property catastrophe reinsurance renewals showed double-digit pricing reductions and improving terms for most placements, Aon said. Beyond pricing, reinsurers appeared willing to negotiate on flexible structures including aggregate covers and products offering earnings protection, according to Aon. Alternative capital, most notably in the form of catastrophe bonds, also helped drive results, the reports said. There has been $15.57 billion of property/casualty catastrophe bonds issued through June 15. “This year is in position to break the Q2 issuance record yet again,” after record-setting second-quarter issuance of $10.45 billion in 2025, Gallagher Re said. The average deal size for the first half of 2026 is $285.0 million, up 12% from the average deal size in 2024 and 3% from the average deal size in 2025, according to Aon. Nine cedents have placed transactions with a total issuance size of over $500 million during the first half of the year, the broker added.
