Jul 17, 2026 Travelers reported sharply higher second-quarter earnings Friday, as lower catastrophe losses, higher investment income and continued strength in commercial insurance underwriting offset softer property market conditions. Net income rose 46% to $2.21 billion in the quarter, Travelers reported. Net written premiums were essentially flat at $11.53 billion. Excluding the sale of its Canadian operations earlier this year, net written premiums increased by 2%, the insurer said. After-tax net investment income increased by 14% to $883 million, reflecting a higher yield on the company’s fixed-income portfolio and growth in average invested assets. Pretax catastrophe losses fell to $518 million, down from $927 million in the prior-year quarter. The combined ratio improved 6.7 percentage points to 83.6%. Travelers also recorded $578 million in favorable prior-year reserve development, up from $315 million a year earlier. Across its three main operating segments, business insurance reported that net written premiums increased 3% to $5.98 billion; bond and specialty insurance premiums rose 14% to $1.24 billion; and personal insurance net written premiums declined 8% to $4.31 billion, reflecting in part the sale of the Canadian business. Speaking on an earnings call with analysts, Chairman and CEO Alan Schnitzer said pricing remained resilient across most commercial lines despite a competitive market. “Other than property, really national property, the pricing environment was very stable,” Mr. Schnitzer said. He added that the company expects “to continue generating strong premium levels at attractive underlying margins.” Net written premiums in the insurer’s business insurance segment increased 5% excluding the Canadian divestiture, led by 7% growth in middle market business, said Greg Toczydlowski, president of the division. “National property premium declined as we maintain our deliberate and disciplined underwriting standards, passing on business where price and terms don’t align with our view of the risk,” Mr. Toczydlowski said. Renewal premium change for the segment was 4.8%, while renewal premium change excluding property was 7.8%, he said.
