Catastrophe bonds outstanding totaled $65.9 billion as of mid-June, while issuance reached $16.1 billion in the first half of 2026, the ratings agency said. Cat bonds have evolved from a niche risk-transfer tool into a mainstream institutional asset class, driven by demand for portfolio diversification and returns that are largely uncorrelated with traditional stock and bond markets, Morningstar DBRS said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s forecast for a below-average hurricane season could reduce yields for hurricane-exposed cat bonds in the near term by increasing investor appetite and lowering perceived risk, Morningstar DBRS said. However, seasonal forecasts have only a temporary effect because cat bonds are priced using long-term catastrophe models rather than one-year forecasts, the ratings agency said. “We expect investor demand for Cat bonds to continue to grow, especially because they have low correlation with the returns on traditional financial assets,” Victor Adesanya, senior vice president, global insurance and pension ratings, said in a statement.
